●一、remain 作為動詞，均為不及物動詞，但有兩種意思，此時不能用進行時態，也沒有被動語態：

1、remain “剩下”、“余下”、“遺留”，試看下例句子：

Some of them have disappeared while others remain today.

它們中的一些已經消亡，然而另外一些今天仍然存在。

After the fire，very little remained of their house.

火災之后，他們家所剩無幾。

Only a few leaves remained (=were still) on the tree.

樹上只剩下幾片葉子了。

After the earthquake, very little remained of the city of Tangshan.

地震過后，唐山這座城市所剩無幾。

2、remain “留下”、“停留”、“呆在”，相當于“stay”

The children remained out because of the weather.

由于天氣晴朗，孩子們繼續呆在室外嬉戲。

The Smiths remained there all through the year.

史密斯一家人在那里呆了整年。

When the others had gone, Joan remained (=stayed) to clean the room.

別人走了，瓊留下來清掃房間。

●二、系動詞：“保持”、“仍然是”，“依舊是”，后接形容詞、名詞、動詞不定式、現在分詞、過去分詞或介詞形容詞短語作表語，指某人或某事物仍保持某種狀態

He remained silent. 他保持沉默。(接形容詞)

Whatever achievements you’ve made, you should remain modest. 無論你取得多么大的成就，你都該保持謙虛。(接形容詞作表語)

Man remained a hunter for thousands of years.人類的狩獵時期有數千年之久。(接名詞)

It remained a secret. 這仍然是個秘密。(接名詞作表語)

Peter became a manager, but Jack remained a worker. 彼得成為了一個經理，而杰克仍然是個工人。(接名詞作表語)

指某事尚待、有待于以后被處置，后面常接不定式的被動形式，表示主語是不定式的承受者。

A lot of work remained to be done. 許多工作還有待完成。(接動詞不定式)

Many problems remain to be solved. 有好多問題尚待解決。

It remains to be seen whether you are right. 你是否正確，以后見分曉。

We will remain in regular contact with them.我們將和他們保持經常的聯系。(接介詞短語)

He had to remain in hospital until he was better. 他不得不一直住院直到身體好些。(接介詞短語作表語)

After the earthquake，very few houses remained standing. 地震之后幾乎沒有房子還矗立著。(接現在分詞作表語，表示正在進行的主動動作)

The guests came in, but she remained sitting at the desk reading.客人們都來了，但她還坐在寫字臺旁讀書。(接現在分詞作表語，表示正在進行的主動動作)

As before, he remained unmoved. 他和以往一樣無動于衷。(接過去分詞作表語,表示主語所處的狀態或已經發生的被動動作)

●三、remains是名詞，表示“遺物”、“遺址”，“剩余物”，其單復數形式相同

The remains of an old castle still stands there silently beside the river.

古城堡的遺址如今仍默默地矗立在河岸邊。

The remains of the meal has been taken away.

剩飯菜都被拿走了。

The archeologists found some remains of the Song Dynasty.

考古學家發現了一些宋代遺跡。

●四、remaining 形容詞，“剩下的”、“余下的”，修飾單個名詞作定語，置于該名詞之前作前置定語，與left同義，但后者必須置于被修飾的名詞之后作后置定語，試比較：

The remaining food is now in the refrigerator.

The food left is now in the refrigerator.

剩下的食品現在放在冰箱里了。

She returned home with the remaining 10 dollars.

She returned home with the 10 dollars left.

她帶著剩下的十美元回到了家。

There are still some apples left.

還剩余一些蘋果。

I bought a gift for her with the remaining money.
